The Room is the story of a patient who is locked in a sanatorium for five long years, without any recollection of the past. He has to escape the room, but it’s unlikely he’ll be able to escape his past, that hides some dark secrets. There are achievements and three different endings that depend on the choices that the player makes at the beginning, during the Rorschach test.
The game is mostly linear and controls are somewhat frustrating, especially the jumping, and the interacting with the objects is also a bit off. However, the atmosphere is spot-on, with a dirty look and occasional flickering lights to add to the sense of dread, along with a couple of jump scares. But The Room is mostly about the frequent tension during the short minutes it takes to get to the end, although there are a few event triggers that might frustrate the player. The game is also ridden with typos, due to the origin of the studio (Hungary).
While there’s nothing groundbreaking about The Room and it has its fair share of problems, it’s still an interesting accomplishment for a game developed in just four days. With more time and polish, it could be memorable, but as it stands it’s a nice addition to any horror fan’s playlist.
