5 - Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy

Psi-Ops was released in June 2004 and it was also in June, but of 2008, that it was offered as a free download with in-game advertising.

This is a third-person shooter with a clever twist, and that’s the variety of psychic powers at our disposal. Nick Scryer has to fight a terrorist organization and encounters some clever and resourceful bosses along the way.

Oh, and even though the ending screen shows a ‘To be continued’, we wouldn’t hold our breath. Well, not anymore, anyway.

6 - Command & Conquer Series

It’s not the game that started a new genre – that’s Dune II from the same creators, Westwood Studios – but it made great use of the lessons previously learned.

Released in 1995, Command & Conquer was universally acclaimed as the greatest thing ever and cemented the real-time strategy genre. In 2007 Electronic Arts decided to offer it as freeware, a marketing stunt for the 12th anniversary of the franchise and, undoubtedly, to gather attention for the upcoming Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 game.

7 - F.E.A.R. Combat

What do you get if you strip F.E.A.R. of its solo campaign? An excellent multiplayer mode. In August 2006 F.E.A.R. Combat was made available for download, allowing matches between downloaders of F.E.A.R. Combat and owners of F.E.A.R.'s retail edition.

Expect all the slow motion effects from the original game, although with a few restrictions due to the multiplayer nature of things.

8 - Grand Theft Auto 2

It may be old (released on October 1999), but it’s the precursor of revolutionary Grand Theft Auto III. More than a game, it’s a lesson of history in the making and how Rockstar crafted one of the most famous video game franchises of all time.

As of December 2004 it became free for download and now everyone can compare it to the masterpiece that is Grand Theft Auto IV. You know, just for giggles.

9 - Savage 2: A Tortured Soul

Savage 2 is a self-published title by S2 Games released in January 2008 that officially became freeware in December of the same year. It’s quite a mix: it features first-person shooter, real-time strategy and action role-playing game elements in a fantasy and science-fiction universe. Too much to handle?

It garnered good reviews and was praised for its originality and focus on team play. And although free, players can pay for a Premium Account and get more options out of it.

10 - Area 51

The famous military base spawned a first-person shooter by Midway in 2005, that included voice talents like David Duchovny (X-Files) and Marilyn Manson (you know, the satanist rockstar that actually made some pretty good records).

Area 51 got respectable reviews and that, incidentally, originated the craptastic next-gen sequel BlackSite.
